Sandiganbayan affirms conviction of ex-Tarlac mayor Frias
The Sandiganbayan 1st Division remains unswayed in its decision to convict former Capas, Tarlac mayor Hermes Frias of graft over the anomalous purchases of items in 1996 and 1997.
The anti-graft court pointed out that the motion for reconsideration of Frias failed to make any new arguments which will persuade it to overturn its decision.
“This court finds that they are mere reiteration and rehashed versions of their arguments raised during trial, and the same have already been judiciously considered by this court in the assailed decision,” the court cited.
“Hence, there is no cogent and compelling reason to discuss the same,” it ruled.
Frias has been found guilty of three counts of graft, one count of falsification and one count of malversation.
The case stemmed from purchases made from various suppliers which were found to be unlicensed and not authorized to do business by the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI).
The court sentenced him to suffer a 20 years in prison.
