Robredo banks on “exceptional” senatorial bets of Otso Diretso
While she lamented the defection of some members of the Liberal Party in Pampanga to the ruling political party coalition, Vice President Leni Robredo expressed hope on Monday that Otso Diretso candidates will still win the people’s votes in the coming May elections because they are exceptional.
“Hopeful ako dahil ang ino-offer namin na mga kandidato, talagang bukod-tangi,” Robredo said in a media interview in San Fernando City, Pampanga where she attended a multi-sectorial forum.
“Iyong sa akin naman, mabigyan lang sana ng pagkakataon na makilala sila – whether Liberal Party o hindi. Alam ko na sa kanila boboto dahil mabubuting tao at mahuhusay na tao iyong ink-offer namin sa publiko,” she added.
The Otso Diretso senatorial bets include election lawyer Romulo Macalintal, Magdalo Party-list Representative Gary Alejano, Erin Tanada, former Solicitor General Florin Hilbay, Samira Gutoc, former Senator and Secretary Mar Roxas, Senator Bam Aquino, and human rights lawyer Chel Diokno.
On the first day of the campaign season for senatorial candidates and Party-list Representation in Congress on Feb. 12, the senatorial slate of Hugpong ng Pagbabago, a regional party headed by presidential daughter and Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte-Carpio, was formally launched in San Fernando City.
Pampanga Governor Lilia Pineda and Pampanga 2nd District Representative Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo endorsed the 13 senatorial candidates of HNP.
Robredo admitted the Liberal Party is no longer intact in Pampanga as it suffered from the “unfortunate” practice of switching political party affiliation in favor of whichever the incumber President belongs to.
“Tingin ko, hindi siya healthy para sa bansa natin,” the vice president said of the practice.
“Pero, parang, on the flip side, baka blessing in disguise din? Baka blessing in disguise, kasi baka pagkakataon din to reassess kung saan papunta iyong party. Measure din siguro ito; siguro, yung natitira at a time na mahirap for us, ito yung natira dahil sa paniniwala,” Robredo said.
“At yun naman yung kailangan natin na mga members – yung naglalagi sa party not because of political considerations, pero dahil shine-share niya yung values ng partido.”
