Rice farmers in Bataan town get free fertilizer from DA
SAMAL, Bataan – The Department of Agriculture (DA), through the Municipal Agriculture Office (MAO), on Friday began distributing free commercial urea fertilizers to rice farmers in 14 barangays here.
Municipal agricultural technologist Lydia Banal said more than 850 rice farmers have so far benefited from the program under DA’s Rice Competitiveness Enhancement Fund (RCEF).
Under the program, Banal said a farmer has to buy at least one bag of urea fertilizer depending on the hectarage of the farm he tills, to avail of the equivalent bag of fertilizer under the “buy one, take one” scheme.
Farmers in this town were given two to eight bags of free urea fertilizers after presenting their receipts of purchase.
“Ang mga rice farmers bibigyan sila ng ayuda para hindi nila masabi na kulang sa abono ang kanilang mga palayan. Binigyan sila ng ganyan para makabawas na sa kanilang budget (The rice farmers will be provided with assistance so that they would not say that they lack fertilizers for their ricefield. They were given such aid to help cut their budget),” Banal said.
RCEF is supervised by the municipal agriculture office in every town.
Farmers were grateful for the assistance especially during this time of the coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19) pandemic.
“Malaking tulong sa amin ang pataba na galing sa gobyerno kasi ang mahal ng pataba. Mahirap ang pagbili ngayon at wala na kaming budget. Malaking tulong sa amin,” farmer Elvira Esconde said.
Adelaida Mojica, another farmer, said a bag of urea fertilizer costs P1,000.
“Ako rin ganun din, the same na din. Wala kaming pambiling pataba dahil mahirap ang buhay ngayon,” Mojica said in concurrence with the other farmers. (PNA)
