Nueva Ecija high school opens ‘honesty store’

A public high school in Talavera town in Nueva Ecija province has launched its own “honesty store” in hopes of inculcating a culture of honesty and integrity among the students.

Catalina Salum, principal of the San Ricardo National High School, said the launch of “Tindahan ni Honest Juan” was intended to enhance values formation among the youth.

“Itong honesty store ay ginagawa po namin noon pa sa bawat kwarto. Bawat silid-aralan ay meron honest store,” she was quoted as saying in a Philippine News Agency report.

“Dun po ang advocacy ng mga mag-aaral at maging mga guro na pagiging honest ay nakikita rito,” she added.

The principal said putting up the honesty store is part of their Project Watch, an undertaking of the Department of Education (DepEd) and Junior Chamber International, which aims to promote time management to make learners productive in society.

“Pag matapat sila sa kanilag sarili, tiyak na tagumpay ang kanilang aanihin,” Salum said in the PNA report.

The store is modeled after the Honesty Cafe of Batanes province, which is left unattended as customers leave money to pay for items and take their own change.

“Tindahan ni Honest Juan” will sell items like candies, biscuits, mineral water and school supplies such as pencils, ball pens, crayons and pad paper.
