Mag-bike o mag-commute muna tayo: DENR urges public to go car-free this month
CITY OF SAN FERNANDO, Pampanga– The Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) 3 (Central Luzon) has called on the public to join its “carless days” campaign in observance of Environment Month this June.
“We encourage the public to join us in going carless on June 6, 19 and 26. This small sacrifice on our part equals a big impact on the environment as it will reduce emissions and at the same time, help us save on fuel,” DENR-3 Deputy Director Arthur Salazar said during the kickoff of the Environment Month at the Government Center here Monday.
Salazar said the DENR has conceptualized the “carless days” campaign to raise public awareness on the adverse effects of climate change.
He said harmful gas emissions from vehicles are among the biggest contributors to climate change.
“Clean air is our shared and collected responsibility and with over 1.3 million registered motor vehicles in Region 3 alone, you can just imagine how much we contribute to air pollution and how much it affects our health and environment,” he added.
Instead of using personal vehicles, Salazar asked the public to instead use public transportation, bicycles and other eco-friendly means, or carpool.
Meanwhile, the event was also marked by the setting up of a one-stop shop for the processing of environmental requirements by the Environmental Management Bureau.
In 1988, then president Corazon Aquino signed Presidential Proclamation 237, declaring the month of June as Philippine Environment Month. (PNA)
