In boon for onion farmers, Ecija town gets new cold storage facility

In a welcome development for onion farmers, another onion cold storage facility is being planned in Laur town in Nueva Ecija province.

The facility, once built in Barangay San Vicente, will be able to hold as much as 20,000 bags of onion, according to the Department of Agriculture and local officials.

The project will benefit members of the San Vicente Alintutuan Irrigators Association under the High-Value Crop Development Program of the Department of Agriculture, in cooperation with the provincial government of Nueva Ecija, a Philippine News Agency report said.

According to the report, this was the second onion cold storage facility that broke ground in the province following the one located in Cuyapo town and will benefit members of the Calancuasan Sur Farmers Association.

Bernie Valdez, chief of the Office of the Provincial Agriculturist, said the construction of the onion cold storage was in response to the request of farmers struggling to improve the shelf life of their produce.

DA Central Luzon Regional Executive Director Crispulo Bautista Jr. has vowed to keep supporting farmers in need of cold storage facilities.
