Fight for justice on Fr. Paez’ killing continues
The fight for justice continues as more than 100 priests concelebrated the funeral mass for Catholic priest Father Marcelito “Tito” Paez, who was shot dead by still unidentified assailants on Monday, December 11, in Nueva Ecija.
The funeral mass was presided by San Jose City Bishop Roberto Mallari at the Saint Joseph Cathedral.
Priests and relatives held up streamers and banners as they call for justice for the slain priest.
Days of demonstrations sparked in different areas in the country as various groups demand for an end to extrajudicial killings.
Bishop Roberto Mallari of San Jose described in his homily for Paez how the priest served the poor “regardless of the risk.”
“Clearly, Fr. Tito’s death is inviting us to concretely show our love for the country,” Mallari said. “In his death, we are being challenged to respond with love amidst pressure and tyranny.”
At the cemetery, the crowd sang Filipino patriotic songs “Bayan Ko” and “Pilipinas Kong Mahal.”
