The end is nigh, at least for the struggle to get the Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity and Expression (SOGIE) Equality Bill passed on 3rd reading at the House of Representatives.

The measure is expected to be approved by lawmakers on Wednesday, September 20. This prompted Bataan 1st District Representative Geraldine Roman to go on Instagram and begin thanking the efforts of all those who helped make this possible.

“I want to thank the House Leadership and my fellow #EqualityChamps for their compassionate hearts and generous support. I also want to thank the former ‘opponents’ of the bill who are now on our side, and who now also wave the flag of Equality,” said Roman.

“Truly, we have shown that respect, humility, diplomacy, unity and the willingness to listen to one another, with neither judgement nor hubris, can work wonders. With so much support, we are on the verge of victory in the Lower House,” she added.

It seems that for Roman and the other Equality Champs, the best is yet to come!

A year after my privilege speech on the Anti-Discrimination Bill, today we are about to witness the historic passage in the Lower House of the SOGIE Equality Bill. I said in that discourse before my colleagues in the 17th Congress, “History awaits. The time and the opportunity to pass the ADB based on SOGIE is NOW.” With almost 180 co-authors, many of whom I had written and conversed with personally up to the last minute in order to gain support for the bill, those words would likely be realized today. I want to thank the House Leadership and my fellow #EqualityChamps for their compassionate hearts and generous support. I also want to thank the former "opponents" of the bill who are now on our side, and who now also wave the flag of Equality. Truly, we have shown that respect, humility, diplomacy, unity and the willingness to listen to one another, with neither judgement nor hubris, can work wonders. With so much support, we are on the verge of victory in the Lower House. To my fellow #EqualityChamps, I ask: do not waiver. To those who have not signed, I enjoin you: let us make history together! To my brothers and sisters in LGBT Community: let us stay united in our quest for a diverse yet inclusive Philippines.
