DENR halts reclamation activities of coal company in Masinloc
The Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) has suspended the reclamation activities of a coal firm in Masinloc, Zambales.
Environment Secretary Roy A. Cimatu said several violations were found in the activities of Alpha Water Realty Services Corporation (AWRSC), operator of the Masinloc Coal-fired thermal power plant project, within the Masinloc Oyon Bay Marine Reserve (MOBMR).
The Provincial Environment and Natural Resources Office (PENRO) served the suspension order last March 26 to the concerned officials of the company.
“We will review their compliance to our requirements while the suspension order is in place. We will not tolerate violators to continue their operations without facing consequences,” Cimatu said.
DENR said the company should stop all activities in relation to its alleged violations.
The firm was also ordered to submit documents and permits relative to the reclamation and sea wall development activities and to rehabilitate the damaged portions of the marine reserve area.
It warned that failure to comply with the conditions will result to the termination of the Special Use Agreement for Protected Area (SAPA) and the filing of appropriate charges.
Aside from the suspension order, DENR said the alleged violations would also be referred to the Bureau of Fisheries an Aquatic Resources for the necessary action.
PENRO has recommended to the Environmental Management Bureau (EMB) to conduct water quality sampling within the MOBMR to find out the condition of the water in the protected area following the reclamation activities. #
