City, 4 towns in Bataan suffer 9-hour brownout
The National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP) and the Peninsula Electric Cooperative (Penelco) conducted Saturday separate preventive maintenance operations causing a nine-hour brownout in a city and four towns in this province.
Power outage started at 8 a.m. that lasted until 5 p.m.
To beat the heat, some residents in this town got out of their houses and brought out baby cribs and used various fans.
Penelco lineman Louie Malimban and foreman Alex Laya said those affected were Balanga City and the towns of Abucay, Samal, Orani, and Hermosa.
Malimban led a team of linemen replacing worn-out insulators and trimmed branches of trees.
“Nagpapalit kami ng mga insulator at sinasabayan namin ng clearing para maiwasan ang mga brownout. Dahil sa mga sirang insulator, nagkakaron ng flashover kaya nakaranas tayo ng mga brownout (we are replacing some insulators and at the same time conducted clearing operation to avoid brownouts. Flashover happened due to worn-out insulators that is why, we experienced brownouts,” Malimban said.
Laya headed another team that replaced two rotten wooden poles. Both teams had the support of heavy equipment.
“Sinabayan lang namin ang NGCP sa kanilang shutdown. Nagpalit sila ng equipment sa loob ng substation (We did maintenance in time with the shutdown of the NGCP. The NGCP replaced equipment inside the substation,” Laya said.
Laya is referring to the NGCP station in barangay Balsik in Hermosa town. (PNA)
