Can stores limit customers based on race? Lauren Young’s tweet draws attention
Lauren Young has gone viral again.
The actress was so bothered; she just had to tweet a question: “Is this even legal?” The tweet came with a photo of her former favorite restaurant in Subic which now has a sign plastered on its glass door that reads, “Only for Chinese customer.” Young expounded on her inquiry—saying she really wants to know if a business is allowed to post signs that limits its customers to a certain category. As of posting, the tweet has garnered more than 1,700 tweets and 6,000 likes. Twitter users replied to her tweet, remarking that the sign is discriminatory and according to the Philippine constitution, unlawful (see tweet of user @davesevs:

that the issue is not an isolated incident; case in point, other countries which have establishments that discriminate against Filipinos, other Asians, Mexicans, and the like.
Meanwhile, user @MichaePetty shared an update that the restaurant in question has changed its sign to one that now reads: “CORRECTION! WE ALSO SERVE CHINESE FOOD”
Most users took the opportunity to berate the Duterte administration which is known for being lenient with policies concerning Chinese nationals.
If anything, Young’s tweet drew an interesting discourse online on how discrimination still exists today in little various forms, and that we should remain vigilant if we come across one.
Is this even legal? (My fave resto in Subic has been sold and this sign is up) I really want to know if business owners are allowed to do this.
If I had a restaurant am I allowed to put up these signs for example:
“Only for dog Customers”
“Only for Filipino Customers”
