CITY OF SAN FERNANDO, Pampanga – The Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) in Region 3 (Central Luzon) dispersed on Thursday some 105,000 fingerlings at the Colo Dam in Dinalupihan, Bataan.

A total of 5,000 common carp and 100,000 GET EXCEL (Genetically Enhanced Tilapia with Excellent qualities) fingerlings were released by the BFAR Provincial Fisheries Office and the Fingerlings Dispersal Unit.

BFAR-Central Luzon director Wilfredo Cruz said the activity is part of the agency’s continuing efforts to repopulate both species and improve the productivity of the reservoir.

“The productivity of man-made water bodies, at certain times, tend to demand manipulation to be able to support the artisanal fishery. This is when BFAR steps up to help sustain and develop its output efficiency through regular stock enhancement,” Cruz said in a statement.

Cruz also said although food supply is stable in Central Luzon, the back-up plan is still essential to ensure continuous food security amid the continuous threat brought by the coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19) pandemic.

“As a coping strategy, BFAR-Central Luzon carries on with activities such as these to ensure that there is a steady fish supply for the region,” he said.

During the activity, fish farmers in the community also received 9,000 red tilapia fingerlings as input assistance.

Barangay Colo chair Ariel Cruz thanked the BFAR for the 100,000 tilapia fingerlings which, he said, is a big help to the community.

“After two months may pang ulam na kung tumagal man ang Covid-19 na ito (After two months, we will have food even if the Covid-19 lasts that long),” Cruz said.

The activity was made possible with the assistance of the provincial government of Bataan and the municipal government of Dinalupihan. (PNA)
