Bataan Cong Roman urges quick response during disasters

Bataan 1st District Representative Geraldine Roman is urging a quick response during disasters.

A statement posted Tuesday on her Facebook page quoted the Central Luzon politiko to have said, “Lubusang nakakaawa ang ating mga kapwa Pilipino na nadadaanan ng malalakas at nakamamatay na mga bagyo. Kung maryoon namang pondo na maaaring gamitin para sa pagbigay ng agaran at pangmatagalang tulong sa mga nasalanta ng bagyo, bakit hindi gamitin ito?”

“Bakit kailangang maghintay ng ilang buwan o ilang taon ang mga biktima?” she lamented.

Roman, who chairs the House Committee on Disaster Management, is wondering why disaster response funds are not augmented if officials say these are lacking.

She said that the country should have already mastered “the efficient and quick sending of life-saving equipment, relief goods and medical aid, especially to isolated areas” since the Philippines is located in the typhoon belt.

Roman also underscores the importance of providing long-term assistance to typhoon victims by providing displaced farmers and fishermen with livelihood opportunities.

“If the old process to fund the rehabilitation of calamity-stricken areas does not work anymore, then it is time for change,” she said.
