Bataan Cong Roman asserts national significance of Balangiga bells
Bataan 1st District Representative Geraldine Roman asserted Friday the value of the returned Balangiga Bells to the country’s history and heritage.
“The Balangiga Bells are part of our historical heritage. The Balangiga Bells are part of our national patrimony,” Roman said on her Facebook page.
Describing herself as a “Fierce Advocate for Conservation of National Patrimony,” Roman hailed the return of the Balangiga Bells to the country, “where they rightfully belong,” after 117 years.
Roman is vice-chairperson of the House Committee on Veterans Affairs and Welfare.
The United States finally returned the Balangiga Bells to the Philippines last Tuesday, Dec. 11, after taking them as “war trophies” during the Philippine-American War in 1901.
The bells are due to be formally turned over on Saturday to the church in Balangiga town in Eastern Samar where it was taken.
