Asean gala dinner to showcase Pampanga-made lanterns
World-class lanterns from San Fernando, Pampanga will adorn the venue for the gala dinner for some 1,300 guests, including Association of Southeast Asian Nations (Asean) leaders, on Sunday.
According to the organizers, the lanterns which will be put up at the SMX Convention Center in the Mall of Arena Complex were designed to highlight the 50 years of the regional organization. They will also reflect the Filipinos’ “penchant for celebrating the holidays.”
While the special gala celebration is a tremendous feat for the country’s lantern-making industry, master lantern Roland Quiambao earlier expressed that innovation in lantern making is crucial to meeting the challenges of the local economy and international production.
In Metro Manila, he said, there’s a big market for Kapampangan lantern makers.
“There is a very big market, not just during the Christmas Season but all throughout the year. There is only the need to expand the lantern lines and transform them to other decorative art for events like Valentine’s and even Halloween,” Quiambao said, as quoted by news organization SunStar.
