Arroyo inspects Clark airport expansion project
Pampanga Rep. Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo, currently the Speaker of the House, visited Friday the construction site at the Clark International Airport which is presently being expanded.
In a statement, Arroyo reiterated her push for the Clark airport to be the alternative to the Ninoy Aquino International Airport in Manila as the country’s main hub.
Responding to questions from accompanying media in light of the recent Xiamen Airways incident at NAIA, the former president said, “Actually, I have been for it and it’s not because of any specific knee jerk reaction to any event.”
The ongoing expansion of the Clark airport involves the construction of a second terminal, which is expected to increase the current capacity of 2.5 million passengers per year to 10 to 12 million.
The new terminal is projected to be operational in June 2020.
In the same statement, Clark airport president Alex Cauguiran said the facility is “the better alternative to NAIA because it can accommodate up to three runways and 80 million passengers per year.”
A Xiamen Airways plane skidded off on Aug. 16 at a NAIA runway, disrupting arrival and departure of hundreds of flights through Aug. 18.
The Clark airport accommodated dozens of the affected flights.
