Arroyo eyes development of aeroponics technology for urban farming
Pampanga 2nd District Representative Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo is pushing for the use of aeroponics technology to address food security in the country.
The Pampanga politiko, in her proposed Aeroponics Technology in Agricultural Production Act of 2016, wants the development of disease-free and cost-effective aeroponics technology to increase farmer productivity and enable urban farming.
Aeroponics is the process of growing vegetation in an air or mist environment without the use of soil or an aggregate medium.
Arroyo says this will enable Filipinos to better use scarce fertile land.
“The main ecological advantage of aeroponics is the conservation of water and energy. When compared to hydroponics, aeroponics offers lower water and energy inputs per square meter of growing areas. Plants and agricultural crops grown using aeroponics spend 99.98 percent of their time in the air and 0.02 percent in direct contact with hydro-atomized nutrient solution,” she said.
