Arroyo: Coastal cleanup can boost fisheries
House Speaker Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo said Monday that cleaning up the coasts will be good for the country’s fisheries.
Arroyo, who is currently Pampanga 2nd District Representative in Congress, participated the coastal cleanup at the Lubao Bamboo Hub and Eco Park, together with Senator Cynthia Villar.
“Itong ginagawa natin na coastal cleanup ay kinabubuti ng environment, kinabubuti rin ng fisheries,” the former President said in her speech at the event.
“Kasi, sabi nga ni Usec. (Eduardo Gongona of the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources) na talagang dapat, kung alagaan mo ang municipal waters, at ito ang ginagawa natin, naaalagaan natin ang fisheries,” she added.
Arroyo, who is an economist by profession, said the coastal cleanup and its impact to the fisheries is relevant these days because of the high inflation rate.
“Kanina, pinag-uusapan natin kung paano makakaahon ang galunggong dahil yun na talaga ang gusto ng mga Pilipino,” the seasoned politiko said.
“Sabi nga ni Usec. na kailangan, malinis ang tubig para maraming isda, at kailangan din sa municipal fisheries yun kasi municipal fishing ang galunggong,” she added.
Arroyo contemplated of a program providing appropriately sized fishing boats for municipal waters, intended for galunggong catch.
“Dahil lilinisin na natin ang Manila Bay sa ginagawa natin, marami sigurong lalagong galunggong doon,” she said.(
