Arroyo calls on ASEAN to do more for migrant workers’ rights
Pampanga 2nd District Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo on August 24 urged the Association on Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) to take more steps to protect and promote migrant workers’ rights.
The Pampanga politiko said she wanted “to advance the sense of community in our shared interest to look after each other in terms of social justice, economic development and common security.”
Arroyo also said her chairmanship of the ASEAN during her presidency resulted in measures to promote migrant workers’ welfare.
“The ASEAN summit that I chaired in January 2007 is most remembered for the declaration to advance ASEAN community from 2020 to 2015, but it also resulted in major agreements for the ASEAN socio-cultural community such as the Cebu declaration Towards One Caring and Sharing Community and the Cebu declaration on the Protection and Promotion of the Rights of Migrant Workers,” she said.
“The ASEAN Declaration on Migrant Workers initially encountered some resistance. But we availed of our chairmanship to push that initiative, on account of the presence of so many Filipino workers overseas, not the least the heroic health workers during the regional SARS (Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome) crisis of 2003,” Arroyo said.
