The town of Apalit on Thursday kicked off the feast of St. Peter the Apostle, or Apung Iru to locals, for the first time since the start of the pandemic.

Now on its 177th the annual three-day fiesta celebration commenced on Tuesday until Thursday, officials said.

According to a Sun Star Pampanga report, the celebration is known for the fluvial parade or “libad” in which the image of St. Peter the Apostle would be fetched from its shrine in Barangay Capalangan and paraded on a pagoda along the stretch of the Pampanga River.

Residents and devotees would either tail the Apung Iru’s pagoda via motorized boats or watch from the riverside as the parade passes by, the report said.

On the second day, the image will be paraded in a religious procession around the municipality.

Another fluvial procession will then be held on the third day of celebration for the return of Apung Iru to its shrine in Barangay Capalangan.

Apalit Mayor Oscar Tetangco, Jr. reminded residents and devotees to prioritize everyone’s safety during the celebration.

He said police personnel and village watchmen are deployed to venues to enforce the wearing of face masks and physical distancing.
