5 Bulacan rescuers swept away by ‘Karding’ flash flood; 4 dead, 1 missing

The bodies of four rescuers were found while a fifth was still missing after they were swept away by a flash flood in San Miguel town in Bulacan province amid Typhoon Karding’s onslaught, according to Bulacan Governor Daniel Fernando.

Interviewed by GMA News, the governor reported that the five members of the Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (PDRRMO) were dragged by strong currents while conducting rescue operations.

The incident happened in Barangay Camias, he said.

“Actually, lima ‘yan, apat na ngayon ang confirmed dead. Mga ano natin yun, team natin sa PDRRMO. Mga empleyado po natin ‘yun,” Fernando said.

The rescuers were riding a boat after their truck broke down on their way to the rescue operation. But a wall collapsed and hit them, the governor said.

Fernando vowed to give aid to the families of the rescuers.

He said around 2,000 people were sheltering in evacuation centers with parts of the province remaining submerged due to the typhoon.
