Bataan Rep. Roman thanks Duterte for supporting LGBT community
Bataan First District Rep. Geraldine B. Roman expressed gratitude over President Rodrigo Duterte’s plan to create a commission for the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) community.
Last December, the President announced in a gathering in Davao City that he is planning to create a commission for the LGBT community, and that he wants them to find the brightest nominee to lead them.
“It only shows that he wants equality for all Filipinos,” Roman said.
Roman, the country’s first transwoman lawmaker, said she welcomes the President’s announcement of his plan create the said Commission “to address the needs of the community as we all work towards an inclusive Philippines where discrimination does not exist.”
Roman, House Speaker Pantaleon Alvarez, deputy speakers Raneo Abu of Batangas and Gwendolyn Garcia of Cebu filed House Bill 6595, which allows civil partnership of persons in opposite- or same-sex relationship and provide for their rights and obligations.
“With regard to the President’s support for Same-Sex Marriage, we would like to advocate for the more feasible option which is the Civil Partnership Bill which has already been filed by Speaker Pantaleon Alvarez,” she added.
Pinning her hopes on the Bill, she said their group is pushing for legal recognition and the civil rights attached to it, “bearing in mind what is plausible at this point in time and without offending religious sensibilities.”
